KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 10): Malaysia’s daily number of new Covid-19 cases rose to 19,991 today from 17,236 yesterday as the nation saw more infected individuals in places including Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Johor. The daily number of pandemic-linked deaths, however, fell to 201, while a rare occurrence of zero imported infections was registered today.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in an update via Facebook that this brought the country's cumulative number of infections to 1.3 million so far.

He added that Selangor reported 7,338 new cases today, compared with 5,740 yesterday, followed by Kuala Lumpur’s 2,374 infections (from 1,567) and Johor’s 1,344 (from 1,232).

Elsewhere, Noor Hisham said new cases in Sabah rose to 1,383 from 1,247, followed by Sarawak's 836 infections (from 589).

Negeri Sembilan’s daily figure, however, fell sharply to 564 from 1,215, while Labuan reported only one new case compared with eight the day before.

On another note, today's infections were entirely locally transmissions, according to Noor Hisham.

He added that the 19,991 new patients comprised 16,563 Malaysians and 3,428 foreigners.

Meanwhile, the cumulative number of Covid-19-related fatalities in the country now stood at 11,162.

According to Noor Hisham, the 201 new deaths involved 163 Malaysians and 38 foreigners.

On the other hand, across hospitals in Malaysia, 1,096 Covid-19 patients were being treated in intensive care units (ICUs), with 570 of them intubated to help them breathe.

As for the good news, the country reported today 16,258 more recoveries from Covid-19, raising the cumulative number of patients who had recovered from the coronavirus to 1.06 million so far.

In a separate statement today, Noor Hisham said the 19,991 new patients included individuals who had been vaccinated against Covid-19.

"[But] on the whole, only 4,632 cases (23.2%) of the total number of cases reported today have a history of Covid-19 immunisation,” he added.

Breaking down today's fatalities, he said 87 deaths were seen in Selangor, followed by 37 in Kuala Lumpur, 20 in Johor, 14 in Perak, 12 in Sabah, 10 in Penang, eight in Melaka and five in Negeri Sembilan.

Meanwhile, three fatalities each were reported in Kedah and Sarawak, while two deaths were seen in Terengganu.

The daily number of Covid-19-related deaths at 201 today fell from 212 fatalities yesterday and the record-high figure of 360 on Sunday (Aug 8), according to Noor Hisham’s statement.

Today's daily figure of zero imported infections was a rare occurrence compared to the 29 imported cases reported yesterday and 10 on Sunday, according to the statement.
