KUALA LUMPUR (May 26): Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases reached a new record high of 7,478 today, according to the Ministry of Health, surpassing the previous peak of 7,289 infections registered yesterday.

The new additions raised cumulative coronavirus infections detected in the country to 533,367.

The country also recorded 63 more deaths related to the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, a new daily high fatality rate, raising the death toll to 2,432. Of the new fatalities, 24 were from Selangor, nine in Kuala Lumpur, eight each from Johor and Kedah, five from Perak, three from Melaka, two each from Sarawak and Negeri Sembilan, and one each from Sabah and Pahang.

As for the new infections today, Selangor contributed the highest number at 2,455, with Kuala Lumpur (760) and Sarawak (640) being the two other highest contributors, according to MoH director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

They are followed by Johor with 587 cases, Kelantan (547), Kedah (542), Penang (420), Negeri Sembilan (370), Perak (264), Sabah (229), Melaka (230), Terengganu (177), Pahang (171), Labuan (49), Putrajaya (29) and Perlis (8).

Meanwhile, 4,665 Covid-19 patients recovered today, bringing total recoveries to 464,727. But as new infections continued to outpace new recoveries, active cases that carry transmission risks rose to 66,208, of which 756 are now in intensive care, with 377 requiring respiratory help.

The Health Ministry has also identified 22 new infection clusters, including 13 linked to workplaces, six from community and three from religious centres. To date, 2,082 Covid-19 clusters have been discovered, of which 1,489 have been declared ended. That leaves 593 active clusters.
