KUALA LUMPUR (June 30): Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases fell to 6,276 today, but the number has been above the 6,000-level for the second consecutive day.

The drop is due partly to lower cases in Kuala Lumpur at 625, from 1,361 on Tuesday. However, Selangor reported a higher number of new infections at 2,836, up from 2,299 yesterday.

Negeri Sembilan logged 644 cases compared with 700 previously, according to Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Consequently, active cases climbed further to 64,129 as daily infections continued exceeding recoveries for the fifth consecutive day. Malaysia’s Covid-19 tally climbs to 751,979 versus total recoveries at 682,680.

The latest confirmed cases were detected from the testing of 83,521 people across the country, representing a positivity rate of 7.51%.

There were 62 deaths reported — involving 59 Malaysians and three foreigners — raising the tally of fatalities linked to the coronavirus to 5,170, said Dr Noor Hisham in a statement.

Of these, 22 casualties were reported in Selangor, nine in Negeri Sembilan, seven in Melaka, five in Kuala Lumpur, four in Johor, three in Sabah, three in Pahang, two in Kelantan, two in Perak, two in Kedah, two in Labuan and one in Sarawak.

The number of patients in intensive care units remained at 905, of whom 452 need ventilators to breathe.

The Ministry of Health detected 23 new clusters — 13 workplace clusters, eight community clusters while the rest are high-risk group and education clusters.

A total of 2,844 infection clusters have been detected locally, of which 886 are active.
