KUALA LUMPUR (May 23): The Ministry of Health (MOH) reported 6,976 new Covid-19 infections, bringing the country's tally to 512,091.

The number of active cases, which carry high transmission risks, climbed to 57,022, of whom 681 patients are currently warded at intensive care units while 361 patients are on ventilators.

Selangor was still the state with the most number of new infections at 2,235, followed by Sarawak with 663, and Johor with 549, while Kuala Lumpur saw 447.

The states or federal territories with the least numbers of Covid-19 infections today were Perlis with eight, Putrajaya with 30, and Labuan with 37 cases.

Of the total number of new cases, 647 cases were from foreigners according to a statement from the Ministry of Health.

There were 49 deaths today from Covid-19, bringing the country's death toll to 2,248. Selangor recorded 14 deaths, Johor recorded eight, Penang six, Melaka six, Kedah four, Sarawak three, Negeri Sembilan two, Kuala Lumpur two, Sabah two, Kelantan one and Perlis one.

The number of recoveries for the day were 3,587, nearly half the daily number of new positive cases.

The MOH detected 24 new clusters today. There are 556 active clusters in the country.
