KUALA LUMPUR (May 6): Malaysia recorded 45 new Covid-19 infections as at noon today, while 135 more patients were discharged, marking another day where recoveries exceeded new cases. 

The total number of cases to date stood at 6,428, said health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah at his daily Covid-19 press conference today.

Meanwhile, cumulative recoveries rose to 4,702, representing 73.15% of total confirmed cases. 

Consequently, the number of active cases also fell to 1,619, representing 25.6% of total confirmed cases.

There was also another death reported in the 24-hour period until noon today, bringing total deaths to 107 or 1.66% of total confirmed cases.

The latest patient who passed away was a 51-year-old Malaysian male, who had a history of diabetes, hypertension and kidney problems. 

Overall, there were 22 patients being treated in the intensive care unit, with nine requiring breathing ventilators. 

Of the 45 new infections recorded today, one case involved a Malaysian who returned from overseas. 

Meanwhile, 24 cases were from the Seri Petaling mosque tabligh gathering cluster.

Elsewhere, one case was from the Kuala Lumpur wholesale market cluster in Selayang under Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO). 

Meanwhile, seven cases were recorded across three active clusters, namely two among Kuching healthcare workers in Sarawak, three from Kampung Sungai Lui, Selangor, and two among the Pedas cluster in Negeri Sembilan/Melaka.

Noor Hisham also said there were new cases recorded among the tahfiz cluster.

In total, 346 madrasahs were pinpointed, of which 16,097 students, teachers and staff were identified, with 8,984 screened for Covid-19. To date, 417 individuals or 4.6% of total identified individuals have tested positive.

By state, the 45 new cases were recorded in five states namely Kuala Lumpur (22), Sarawak (11), Selangor (9), Negeri Sembilan (2) and Melaka (1).
