SHANGHAI (July 3): China's major stock indices tumbled over 4 percent early Friday, following reports by official media that China's securities regulator was preparing to investigate possible market manipulation.

The CSI 300 was down 4.2 percent at 3,935.9, while the Shanghai Composite was off 4.9 percent to 3721.9 as of 0144 GMT.

Chinese stocks have lost more 20 percent since mid June, and policymakers have been struggling to maintain support for the market.
