(June 5): More than 1,000 people had gathered at Putra World Trade Centre this morning in anticipation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's tell-all forum on the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) but Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar directed the organisers to cancel the event.

In a tweet, Khalid said that the dialogue, organised by law-based NGO SukaGuam, should be called off on the grounds of public order and national harmony.

"Dialog 1MDB bersama NGO2. Demi ketenteraman Awam dan keharmonian masy, @PDRMsia mengarahkan dialog diatas, di PWTC, KL pagi ini dibatalkan."

SukaGuam chairman Datuk Khairul Anwar Rahmat is to moderate the forum.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Najib's supporter-turned-critic, arrived at 9am and was greeted by a host of supporters and members of Perkasa.

Dr Mahathir had been one of Najib's fiercest critics, calling on the latter to resign over the 1MDB debacle.

Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan and Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali were also present.

Also seen outside the hall was former Umno Batu Kawan division deputy chief Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan, who had lodged a report with the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission against 1MDB.

Najib is expected to arrive at 10am.

The forum was organised purportedly to let Najib clear the air with civil society and non-governmental organisations over 1MDB, the state investment firm under the Finance Ministry which has been accused of mismanagement and opaque dealings resulting in RM42 billion debts.

Dr Mahathir has been Najib's chief critic over 1MDB, of which the prime minister is advisory board chairman.

SukaGuam had a few days ago confirmed that Najib would be attending the forum. – The Malaysian Insider
