KUALA LUMPUR (April 12): Alvin Goh Leong Yeong, the man who infamously fled from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters last year, was charged together with his brother today at the sessions court here with seven counts of money laundering amounting to RM2.14 million.

Alvin and his brother Goh Yeong Hui had pleaded not guilty to the charges read to them today before Justice Sabariah Othman.

The two brothers were charged with accepting money that was gained from illegal activities between September and November 2019. The charges relate to the arrest of almost a thousand Chinese nationals working for a major online scam syndicate in Cyberjaya two years ago.

The two brothers had received the money from two Chinese nationals, Wang Hangang and Feng Chuang. It is not known if these two Chinese nationals have been arrested.

The pair were charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act, and they face up to 15 years in prison, and a maximum fine of not less than five times the alleged sum if found guilty.

The court only granted bail for one sibling, Yeong Hui, as Alvin is currently serving his two-year detention under the Prevention of Crime Act for online gambling.

The judge granted RM200,000 bail with one surety for Yeong Hui, and ordered him to report to the nearest police station once a month until the disposal of the money laundering case.

She also set May 25 for the next mention.

It was reported that Alvin and another suspect known as Addy Kanna have been identified as coordinators and agents tasked with preparing call centres to scam syndicates.

The call centres, equipped with computers and telecommunication equipment, operated from offices and luxury residences targeting Chinese citizens for online gambling and other scams.

Alvin was reported to have escaped by climbing over the fence at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya on Oct 11 with the help of his two bodyguards, upon being released by the MACC.
