KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 14): Bintai Kinden Corp Bhd has inked a deal to explore and pursue an engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contract for the power import project by Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd in Sarawak.

In a statement on Tuesday (Dec 14), the firm said its unit Kejuruteraan Bintai Kindenko Sdn Bhd (KBK) is teaming up with Kejuruteraan Gemilang Jaya Sdn Bhd (KGJ) to jointly explore and pursue the EPCC contract.

It said KBK had signed a joint-venture agreement (JVA) to form a 80:20 consortium with KGJ to tender and, if successful, undertake the execution of the EPCC project in Tanjung Kidurong, Bintulu, Sarawak.

Bintai Kinden said the JVA targets to secure the project which entails the development of a new extra-high voltage substation at the Petronas LNG Complex (PLC), connecting directly to Sarawak Energy Bhd’s (SEB) 275kV substation that will provide 90MW power to PLC through its existing 33kV network.

“By reducing PLC’s internal power generation, 90MW of electricity will be sourced from SEB’s substation, which mainly is generated by renewable hydroelectric power. This project unleashes the potential for PLC to utilise renewable energy in its operation,” the company said in a statement.

Pursuant to the JVA, Bintai Kinden said KBK will be responsible for electrical works in the project, whereas KGJ will undertake civil works on the substation site, structural building works as well as building mechanical and engineering works.

Bintai Kinden deputy chief executive officer Azri Azerai said if successful, the company’s participation will mark its maiden foray into the renewable energy sector.

“The EPCC contract would add to Bintai Kinden’s experience in electrical engineering services for the energy sector, including for power stations and the oil and gas segment.

“As sustainability becomes front and centre in Malaysia’s transition towards net zero carbon emissions, the power import project would allow Bintai Kinden to play a role in addressing the carbon footprint in natural gas play, already the cleanest fossil fuel supply.

“Bintai Kinden will seek more opportunities in the renewable energy space, which will only see further growth as the region develops more renewable energy-related infrastructure in the future,” he said.

At the midday break on Tuesday, Bintai Kinden shares settled 1.89% or half a sen lower at 26 sen, valuing the company at RM146.86 million, with 12.63 million shares transacted.
