KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 30): Berjaya Corp Bhd (BCorp) has reported its sixth consecutive quarterly loss, due mainly to the impact of the lockdown on its gaming operation under Sports Toto Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

The group posted a slightly wider net loss of RM59.31 million for the first quarter ended Sept 30, 2021 (1QFY22) versus RM58.95 million a year ago.

However, the loss was partly cushioned by the share of better results from other associates and joint ventures, BCorp said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia.

Quarterly revenue shrank 28.68% year-on-year to RM1.39 billion from RM1.94 billion.

BCorp said Sports Toto saw 37 draws cancelled during the quarter, after the full movement control order took effect on June 1, with the gaming business only allowed to resume operations on Sept 14 and conducted eight draws after that. In comparison, it conducted 42 draws in the same quarter last year.

However, it stated that the quarterly revenue was mitigated by higher sales performance achieved by both the motor distribution business operated by HR Owen and the hotels and resorts segment.

On prospects, BCorp said it is cautiously optimistic that with the easing of travel and social restrictions, its performance for the remaining quarters of the financial year ending June 30, 2022 is expected to recover expeditiously as more business sectors have resumed full operations.

Berjaya Corp's shares closed unchanged at 25.5 sen, valuing the conglomerate at RM1.38 billion. Year-to-date, the stock has risen 34% from 19 sen.
