KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia did not deport Adelaide band I Killed the Prom Queen after its performance in Kuala Lumpur, guitarist Jona Weinhofen confirmed, saying the band was released with no action taken.

“A lot of press is stating we were deported. For the record, we were released with no action against us and apologised to by [the] DG of immigration,” Jona tweeted using his Twitter handle @jonaweinhofen.

Jona also tweeted: “Wrongful mistreatment of anyone in an immigration situation is not OK in any country”.

ABC Radio Australia reported on Monday that Malaysia’s immigration authorities had detained members of the Australian metalcore band after promoters failed to provide the necessary permits.

Earlier, the guitarist complained about the treatment by Malaysian authorities in a series of tweets including: “Sorry Malaysia, but after this horrible experience, I don’t think we will return in a hurry.”

Some Twitter users felt that the authorities were just doing their job, such as @vongelugor who said: “@jonaweinhofen Make sure you hire better promoters. Immigration officers [are] just doing their job. Can’t simply let anyone in without a visa, no?”

To this, Jona responded: “@vongelugor Oh, I totally agree, but immigration admitted the fault lay with the promoter and yet we were still treated horribly.”

He also said: “@vongelugor And then apologised to and told we never should have been treated that way.”
