KUALA LUMPUR (March 1): Attorney-general Tommy Thomas has been granted leave to sue lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah for contempt of court, according to a report in Malaysiakini.

The portal today said this is over comments Shafee made in a KiniTV video entitled "Shafee: This is completely bonkers".

Thomas' leave application was approved by Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Mohd Firuz Jaffril this morning and case management for the civil suit has been set for March 25.

Thomas was represented by senior federal counsel Shamsul Bolhassan.

Shamsul was quoted as saying that papers will be served to Shafee "within 14 days".

In the video, among the statements Shafee was recorded as saying were:

"[...] But we think our case is very good. Ok? If you leave the judge alone, do not influence the judge, if the judge is straight, if witnesses are not coached and not fabricated evidence, we should win. Ok?

"Much to our surprise. My opinion is we should win. Ok? Alright."

Shafee was reported as having made these comments after his client, former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal over three money laundering charges on Feb 7.

Thomas had applied to discharge Najib only to charge the latter again with the same three charges before the Sessions Court.
