KUALA LUMPUR (May 6): Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who turns 94 in July, says he is grateful that he is still able to fast during the holy month of Ramadhan this year.

During the monthly morning assembly with the prime minister, attended by civil servants from the various government ministries and agencies, he said the act of fasting during Ramadhan is not just for 'pahala' (merit) but also is an opportunity for Muslims to train themselves in fighting temptation.

"Those that cannot fight 'nafsu' (temptation) are weak, and the weak are unlikely to succeed. Only the strong, those that can control themselves, will succeed.

"I am grateful that I am still able to fast," he said.

"Fasting is not only about fighting hunger, but also about controlling one's urges to do everything that is prohibited in Islam," he added.

Dr Mahathir told the civil servants that by restraining themselves from the negative, they will be able to gain the trust and confidence of the people.
