(Aug 7): With the Malaysian authorities recovering more debris such as a window and aircraft seat cushions on Reunion Island, The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) highlighted seven conspiracy theories surrounding the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

1. Debris was planted

The Australian newspaper said many believed that the debris on Reunion Island was planted after those responsible for the plane's disappearance were about to come to be exposed.

2. Plane shot down by military

“Flight MH370: The Mystery” written by Nigel Cawthorne claimed that the plane was accidentally shot down by US-Thai strike fighters in a secret training drill in the South China Sea, said the report.

3. CIA is in it

Previously former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad wrote in his blog that Boeing and the US intelligence agency would know if the plane's systems failed.

"Someone is hiding something. It is not fair that MAS and Malaysia should take the blame."

4. The plane was in Diego Garcia

The US government had denied claims of MH370 being forced to land at its military base Diego Garcia, an atoll 3,500km west of Malaysia, according to SMH.

Diego Garcia is popularly believed to be used by the CIA.

5. Hijacked by terrorists

"Pilots are not guilty; the plane was hijacked by unknown terrorists. We know that the name of the terrorist who gave instructions to pilots is Hitch," a source told a Russian newspaper.

"The plane is in Afghanistan not far from Kandahar near the border with Pakistan."

6. Insurance scam theory

SMH wrote that the discovery of debris would support the elaborate insurance scam claim, which theorises someone onboard had a large life insurance policy and their family stood to gain.

7. Alien abduction

Not forgetting extra terrestrials, where some believed they returned to Earth and planted the debris.

This week Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib announced that the team of experts analysing the debris have "conclusively confirmed" the wreckage is from MH370.

France says it will launch new searches by air, land and sea from Reunion island to hunt for more possible MH370 wreckage.
