PUTRAJAYA (March 31): Ex-prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is expected to know the fate of his review of a Federal Court decision to uphold his conviction and sentence on all seven SRC International Sdn Bhd charges.

A five-member bench led by Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Datuk Abdul Rahman Sebli is expected to deliver its decision on the review at 9am on Friday (March 31).

The other members of the bench are Federal Court judges Datuk Vernon Ong Lam Kiat, Datuk Rhodzhariah Bujang, Datuk Nordin Hassan and Court of Appeal judge Datuk Abu Bakar Jais.

Should the former Umno president’s review be allowed unanimously or by majority, Najib is expected to be released on bail. The former PM has been serving his 12-year jail sentence since Aug 23 last year. There would also be a rehearing either at the apex court or a retrial at the High Court.

If the review is dismissed, then it would be considered the conviction and sentence are affirmed, and Najib would continue to serve his jail sentence. He has been in jail for 221 days including Friday.

Najb was found guilty by the High Court on July 28, 2020 of three counts of criminal breach of trust and three counts of money laundering of RM42 million of SRC funds between Dec 26, 2014 and Feb 10, 2015.

He is also found guilty of abusing his power with regard to the RM4 billion Retirement Fund Inc (KWAP) loans which the Cabinet approved via government guarantees in two meetings that he chaired in August 2011 and March 2012.

A three-member Court of Appeal had upheld the conviction and jail sentence and RM210 million fine on Dec 8, 2021, and this was further confirmed by a five-member bench led by Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat on Aug 23 last year.

Over 120 journalists and photographers have descended to the Palace of Justice here to cover the outcome. The Edge is bringing the proceedings live.
