KUALA LUMPUR (March 24): Axiata Group Bhd has appointed the group’s chief financial officer (CFO) and joint-interim group CEO Vivek Sood as managing director and group CEO, effective Friday (March 24).

“Vivek is an experienced telecommunications (telco) executive with over two decades of industry experience in multiple countries,” the telco group said in a statement.

“In his new role at Axiata, Vivek will lead the company’s strategic growth initiatives, including the expansion of 5G and digital infrastructure and service offerings,” it added.

Vivek’s joint-interim CEO partner Dr Hans Wijayasuriya was appointed group executive director and CEO of the group’s telco business.

As for the CFO post, Axiata said the group’s chief corporate development officer Lila Azmin Abdullah will be taking over the position from Vivek.

Axiata chairman Tan Sri Shahril Ridza Ridzuan said the board is happy to appoint Vivek as its new group CEO and for Hans to take the executive director post, adding that their track record of success as the group’s joint-interim CEOs puts them in the ideal position to lead Axiata into the future and ensures continuity of its strategies.

“The completion of the Celcom-Digi merger at the end of last year was due to their skillful leadership in closing a complex transaction,” Shahril said, adding that has created the largest Malaysia telco, under the capable leadership of the best Malaysian talent in its group.

“This allows Axiata to now focus on our strategic goals in our other markets, primarily South Asia and Indonesia, and to drive further innovation and value in our digital infrastructure and services businesses,” he said.

Shares in Axiata ended one sen or 0.33% lower at RM2.99, giving the group a market capitalisation of RM27.45 billion.
