KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 21): Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has claimed that the party is the victim of “selective prosecution”, after its information chief Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan was charged earlier on Tuesday (Feb 21) with corruption.

The former prime minister was quoted by Free Malaysia Today (FMT) as saying that every party needed funds to operate and this included funds from corporate supporters.

FMT quoted Muhyiddin as insisting that Bersatu was subject to selective prosecution and that he said Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) had also received funds from their supporters, but questioned as to why their leaders were not charged in court.

“We actually expected that this would be done by the PH-BN government to weaken Bersatu, after seeing growing support for Perikatan Nasional (PN),” said the PN chairman.

Wan Saiful Wan Jan was charged at the Sessions Court on Tuesday, in connection with the Jana Wibawa programme.

Wan Saiful was charged for soliciting a bribe for helping Nepturis Sdn Bhd obtain approval from the government for the Central Spine Road project worth RM232 million in April 2022.

The second charge was for receiving a bribe amounting to RM6.96 million from Nepturi, through his company’s bank account number.

Wan Saiful had pleaded not guilty to both charges.

He claimed trial before judge Azura Alwi.

Both charges come under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act for alleged corruption involving the government’s Jana Wibawa scheme.

After he pleaded not guilty, the judge then set RM400,000 bail and had ordered that he surrender his passport to the courts by March 22.
