KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 29): The Government is building Malaysia’s first green energy islands at Pulau Redang and Pulau Perhentian, which will supply consumers there with 24-hour electricity by 2025, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The pioneering project will be supplied with a consistent, affordable and low-carbon supply of electricity, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 70% from 2022 levels.

Aside from that, Ismail Sabri said the Government is also developing a clear national Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) framework with good and orderly governance and regulation.

“[This is] so that RECs produced in this country have credibility, transparency and high value. This will convince corporate companies to offset their carbon footprint from fossil fuel generation sources through REC instruments,” he said.

Ismail Sabri was speaking during the launch of the fifth International Sustainable Energy Summit (ISES) 2022 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) on Monday (Aug 29).

The summit is a joint collaboration by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia with the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources.

SEDA was established in September 2011 under the SEDA Act 2011 (Act 726) with the key purpose of driving the renewable energy and energy efficiency agenda in the country.

The summit will engage in intellectual discussions that include envisioning the future of electricity market to achieve the Government’s renewable energy target in the national installed capacity mix of 31% by 2025 and 40% by 2035.
