KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 31): Second Finance Minister Datuk Johari Abdul Ghani asserted there is nothing wrong in former ministers asking questions about 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) in Parliament.

On his way out from the Parliament today, Johari was asked to share his view on a query made by his predecessor Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Mohd Hanadzlah last Monday, on the necessity of incorporating 1MDB in the first place.

“Nothing wrong to ask a question. In Parliament, everyone can ask a question,” said Johari, who is also a Member of Parliament (MP) for Titiwangsa.

Other questions posted by Ahmad Husni last week in Parliament, included those related to the Bandar Malaysia deal for which full payment will only be made by 2022, despite a 60% stake sale by 1MDB. He also asked about the binding term sheet between 1MDB and International Petroleum Investment Co (Ipic)’s subsidiary, Aabar Investments PJS.

Ahmad Husni, who is also the MP for Tambun, said he was questioning 1MDB’s dealings, because he was concerned allegations of financial wrongdoings linked to the state-owned investment fund, would negatively impact global perception of Malaysia.

Subsequent to Ahmad Husni, former Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal and former Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin also posted their respective queries on 1MDB in Parliament last week.

Dewan Rakyat’s Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia said these ex-members of Cabinet had breached their oath of secrecy by speaking on issues they had knowledge of during their tenure as ministers.

The inspector-general of police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, on the other hand, also reportedly said the police department has opened investigation papers over the matter and will record statements from three of these former cabinet members for allegedly leaking government secrets.
