KUALA LUMPUR, 12 JULY 2022: Over the next ten years, global food consumption is expected to increase by 1.4% annually, mainly driven by the rising population. Meanwhile, low and middle-income countries are projected to strongly contribute to the demand growth, given the rapid expansion and intensification of their production.

These are among critical predictions revealed in the latest collaborative report between OECD and The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which also sees growth of global trade in the primary agricultural commodities and processed products in line with production levels over the next decade.

What this means for Malaysia's agricommodity sector?

Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities of Malaysia, YB Datuk Hajah Zuraida Kamaruddin, says, "The future is here, whereby the role of emerging markets - like Malaysia - proves indispensable and crucial to the global supply chain. With accelerated innovation in growing, raising, and harvesting technology, it's an exciting time to harness Malaysia's potential to transform into the hub of agricommodity, regionally and globally."

Unlocking this possibility, the Malaysia International Agricommodity Expo & Summit 2022 (MIACES) has spearheaded the momentum towards this vision, expecting to create over RM300 billion export value for agricommodity players in a global marketplace event with the participation of over 20 countries.

Happening at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) from 26 to 28 July, MIACES showcases an exhibition of in-demand commodity products, services, and up-and-coming agri-technology under one roof. The 3-day event also features conferences, roundtable discussions, B2B meetings, and an evening of prestigious awards in recognition of movers and shakers in the sector.

As Malaysia rebuilds its economies in light of the Covid-19 crisis, Zuraida adds, "We urge industry players to leverage on MIACES as a powerful stepping stone - a platform with a conducive business environment that facilitates them to forge connections, spur greater-level transactions, explore potential investments, and strategize new market opportunities in these few productive months before we enter the new year of 2023."

Safeguarding global food security, sustainably

The latest joint report by OECD and FAO also recommends large-scale adoption of climate-smart production processes and technologies while asserting the importance of a well-working, transparent, and regulated multilateral trading system in a rising import-export interdependency among regions.

"MIACES is a step-forward that connects industry players with innovative solutions, contributing towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially as the world faces a changing climate. Through the MIACES roundtable discussions, we hope to inspire dialogues on forward-looking policies while ensuring sustainable development in Malaysia as the producing country and exporter," concludes Zuraida.

MIACES will serve as a one-stop centre for meeting the supply and demand within the ecosystem locally and globally, from producers, innovators, trade exporters and importers, and investors to key policymakers, researchers, and members of academia.

Themed "Advancing Agricommodity in Sustainable Ecosystem," showcasing various agricommodity products, this year's MIACES features focus sectors of Palm Oil, Rubber, Timber, Cocoa, Pepper & Kenaf, among the main drivers of the national economy of Malaysia as the summit's hosting country.
