KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 18): Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik is suing Penang Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy for defamation.

Law firm Messrs Akberdin & Co, which is representing Zakir, had today served a writ of summons on Ramasamy. In the writ sighted by theedgemarkets.com, Zakir claimed Ramasamy published defamatory statements in four articles between 2016 and Aug 8, 2019, after the preacher gave a talk in Kelantan.

The writ, filed on Wednesday (Oct 16) at the High Court here requires Ramasamy to enter an appearance within 14 days from today. Zakir is seeking general, compensatory, aggravated and exemplary damages, plus interest and cost of the legal action.

Zakir alleged Ramasamy's statements suggested, among others, that Zakir is an evil man who causes disharmony among the multi-racial citizens of Malaysia. Zakir claimed Ramasamy's statements gave the impression that Zakir is a dishonest Muslim preacher who committed offences in other countries including Canada and the UK.

Zakir claimed the statements issued by Ramasamy were actuated by malice, hatred, envy, and made without verification pertaining to the truth and validity of the allegations.
