KUALA LUMPUR (July 1): Former Umno vice president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein opined that Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has the right to return as Umno President according to party's constitution.

Speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby today, Hishammuddin said the party should prioritise members' unity now instead of having deferential views on leadership candidates.

"From the angle of party constitution, indeed Datuk Zahid Hamidi has the right to come back as leader. For me most important now is to look at unity, and the party's position. I want to see the party solid, we are in a good position right now compared to last year," he said.

Hishammuddin also said the Pakatan Harapan government should focus on promoting economic growth instead of continuing to blame the previous administration.

"Stop digging [up] the old stuff and pointing fingers at the previous administration. You can still do it, but at the same time do your job. Malaysia, unlike what has been portrayed by the government, is not in such a bad state, we still have a lot of potential, we must give hope to the people," he said.

"So beginning from this Parliament sitting, instead of keep thinking who should be the prime minister or party president every day, who is looking after our economy for the country? The countries around the region are growing, and we are too caught up in our daily political scenario, it is not helping us to go forward.

"Tomorrow is not the party's general assembly, neither [is it] the general election, so stop politicking and focus on growth, the economy is stagnant now, smallholders are still suffering, that is my concern," he added.
