KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 5): Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said today Malaysia’s healthcare services have the capacity to triumph over the Covid-19 pandemic and that the government will support frontliners in the effort to curb the outbreak.

Tengku Zafrul said via Twitter today that he had indicated this in a CNBC interview this morning, during which he also shared that the government's efforts in stimulating the economy are continuous and that policymakers are focused on protecting lives and livelihoods.

"Interview with CNBC this morning to discuss current issues including Covid-19 containment efforts, stimulating the economy and attracting investors. I shared that the government’s efforts in stimulating the economy are continuous and we are focused on protecting lives and livelihoods.

"Addressing the spike of Covid-19 cases and overcoming a third wave, I believe we will triumph with the cooperation of Rakyat (people) and the government. Our healthcare services have the capacity, and the government will support our frontliners. We’ve flattened the curve before, and we will flatten it again,” Tengku Zafrul said.

Malaysia had in recent days reported spikes in the daily number of new Covid-19 cases at above 300.

According to health director general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah’s statements since Wednesday (Sept 30), the country had on Saturday (Oct 3) reported 317 additional confirmed Covid-19 cases, the highest number of daily cases ever recorded by the country since the beginning of the pandemic. 

On Friday (Oct 2), Dr Noor Hisham said 287 additional confirmed Covid-19 cases were reported compared to 260 on Thursday (Oct 1) and 89 on Wednesday (Sept 30).

Yesterday, the nation reported 293 new Covid-19 cases, according to him.
