KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 18): G25 spokesperson Datuk Noor Farida Ariffin said she has no clue about being under investigation for sedition because of her call for a review of Shariah law on khalwat (close proximity between opposite sexes) but was willing to cooperate with police.

She told The Malaysian Insider she did not see why her remarks were so contentious and said problems should be solved by addressing them directly instead of “shooting the messenger”.

“I don’t understand why my call for a review of Shariah laws have to be probed under the Sedition Act.

“Don’t shoot the messenger. If there is a problem, address it.”

Saying she has nothing to hide, she added: “If the police call me to facilitate investigations, I will cooperate.”

A news portal reported today the Malacca police confirming that Noor Farida was being investigated for sedition.

A report was lodged against her earlier this month, it quoted state police chief Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye saying.

A separate police report against the man who threatened rape against Noor Farida over her comments was also lodged recently by DAP women leaders in Penang.

Facebook user Sharul Nizam Ab Rahim had posted on the social media site last week that he would break into Noor Farida’s home, lie on her bed and “try” her.

The retired prominent civil servant has received support from 48 civil society groups condemning the threat of sexual assault as a way to silence views on critical matters affecting Malaysia’s democracy.

Noor Farida is the second G25 member to be investigated for sedition.

Tawfik Ismail has also been hauled up for saying in an exclusive interview with The Malaysian Insider that the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) should be abolished.
