KUALA LUMPUR (March 27): In line with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s promise of a more inclusive and comprehensive economic stimulus package, the government has unveiled some financial assistance targeted at those working in the gig economy.

A one-off financial assistance of RM500 will be given to full-time e-hailing drivers, whose daily income has been impacted by the enforcement of the Movement Control Order or partial lockdown.

The assistance will benefit 120,000 e-hailing drivers, said Muhyiddin when announcing the enhanced stimulus package today, and will involve an allocation of RM60 million.

The government has also previously announced a one-off payment of RM600 for taxi drivers starting April 1, 2020.

One-off payments for households and individuals

At the same time, 4.4 million households earning less than RM4,000 a month will get a one-off payment of RM1,600 each from the government, of which RM1,000 will be paid in April and the balance RM600 in May.

For households earning between RM4,000 and RM8,000 per month, they will be entitled to a RM1,000 aid each. This payment will be split in half, with the first half to be paid in April and the balance in May.

Unmarried individuals aged 21 years and above, who are earning RM2,000 and below, will also get RM500 in April and RM300 in May. This will involve 3 million individuals.

Singles with a monthly income of between RM2,001 and RM4,000 will also get RM500 from the government, with RM250 to be paid in April, and another RM250 in May.

Meanwhile, the balance of the living expenses aid, which amounts to RM3.2 billion, will be disbursed in July.
