KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 3): Uzma Bhd has appointed its independent non-executive director Datuk Abdullah Karim as the group’s new independent chairman.

He replaces Datuk Seri Syed Ali Syed Abbas Alhabshee, who resigned after serving as independent chairman for over 10 years to pursue his personal interest.

Uzma said Abdullah is currently the chairman of the group’s nominating committee and member of the audit committee.

He brings with him over 41 years of experience in the oil and gas (O&G) industry after joining Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) in 1977, the company said in a statement.

Abdullah served Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd as the project engineer in 1981 and general manager at its engineering division in 1991. In 2007, he was made the vice president of Petronas and managing director and CEO of Petronas Carigali.

In 2010 to 2012, Abdullah served as the president of Petronas Carigali and vice president-cum-CEO of development & production at Petronas.

He also served as the executive assistant to the president of Petronas in 1994.

Further, in 2004 Abdullah held the position as the vice-president in charge of exploration and production business at Petronas.

“Abdullah was also responsible for overseeing the construction and completion of the MLNG3 (Malaysia liquefied natural gas 3) and PFLNG1 (Petronas floating liquefied natural gas 1) projects,” said Uzma.

“PFLNG1 was the world first owner-operator floating facility for the production of LNG. Both Petronas and Abdullah received a Distinguished Achievement Award and Special Citation respectively for the groundbreaking PFLNG1 project at the recent OTC Asia in Kuala Lumpur in March 2018,” it added.

Uzma’s shares closed two sen or 1.63% lower at RM1.21, giving it a market capitalisation of RM387.23 million.
