KUALA LUMPUR (May 25): The US Department of State has called on Russia to cease its lies and account for its role in the Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 shoot down.

The department pointed at the findings announced by the Dutch-led Joint Investigation Team (JIT) as having confirmed its initial stance.

"The announcement confirms and adds detail to what we have said from the earliest days of this tragedy: MH17 was shot down by a Russian-made BUK surface-to-air missile fired from territory in eastern Ukraine, controlled by Russia and Russia-led forces," spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a statement today.

According to a BBC report, a Dutch official from the JIT had said earlier today that the missile was carried in a convoy of vehicles that were part of the Russian armed forces.

Additionally, the missile had been supplied by Russia's 53rd anti-aircraft brigade in Kursk.

The US Department of State also urged Russia to respect and adhere to a UN Security Council resolution supporting the MH17 investigation, which had called on all UN member states to provide any requested assistance to civil and criminal investigations.

"We remain confident in the ability of the Dutch criminal justice system to prosecute those responsible in a manner that is fair and just," Nauert said.

The downing of MH17 saw all 298 passengers and crew on board dead.
