KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 19) : It must have been a sad birthday for Nurul Izzah Anwar on Saturday (Nov 19) as the princess of ‘reformasi’ failed to defend her 'family seat' and PKR traditional bastion of Permatang Pauh in the 15th General Election (GE15).

Izzah, who turned 42, was beaten by Perikatan Nasional candidate Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan from PAS, who won by a majority of 5,381 votes.

Nurul Izzah, the daughter of Pakatan Harapan's chairperson Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, had held the seat for one term — she won in 2018 with a majority of 15,668 votes.

Permatang Pauh, which is located in the mainland Penang, has long been Anwar's stronghold.

In 2004 the seat was contested by his wife, Datin Ser Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail before she stepped down in 2008, to make way for her husband to return to Parliament.
