KUALA LUMPUR (July 13): UMW Group's automotive sales surged 14% in June, underpinned by improved sales by UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) and its associate company, Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua).

In a statement on Wednesday (July 13), the group said it delivered 30,103 units in June compared with 26,480 units registered in the previous month as it continued to fulfil its encouraging outstanding order book.

UMWT registered its highest monthly sales for the year in June with 8,939 units compared with 7,579 units sold in May.

"To refresh its model line-up, on June 24, 2022, UMWT started taking order for the all-new Toyota Veloz. The locally assembled all-new Toyota Veloz will replace the Toyota Avanza in the Malaysian B-segment MPV market.

"Meanwhile, Perodua registered sales of 21,164 units in June 2022, 12% higher than the 18,901 units registered in May 2022.

"Perodua's top-selling models for the first half of 2022 were the Myvi, Axia and Bezza. To further strengthen its market leadership position, Perodua started taking order for the all-new Perodua Alza on June 23, 2022," it said.

UMW Holdings Bhd president and chief executive officer, Datuk Ahmad Fuaad Mohd Kenali, said the group is pleased with the improved sales registered by UMWT and Perodua.

"While the sales tax exemption was not extended beyond June 2022, we are grateful to the government for extending the sales tax exemption for outstanding bookings made by June 30, 2022 to be registered by March 31, 2023.

"This announcement also saw a massive rise in the bookings for new vehicles for both UMWT and Perodua in the last week of June 2022. Both companies will continue to ramp up production to deliver our cars to the customers," Ahmad Fuaad said.

At the time of writing, shares in UMW Holdings traded two sen or 0.69% lower at RM2.87, giving it a market capitalisation of RM3.35 billion.
