(May 11): Some Umno Youth leaders have come up to openly call for Umno president and former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to resign.

At about 2.30pm today, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin posted on his Facebook page a message on the urgency to rebuild Umno on the same day that marks the 72nd anniversary of Umno.

"I invite comrades who want to rebuild Umno from the collapse we see today, to be together with me because this change must begin immediately. We can't postpone it anymore. Umno's contribution to religion, race and country is too great for us to allow this sacred party to be destroyed and disappear forever.

"For us to return to the original Umno, we must go through a great change in the party. We must make a change we never thought of. What we need today is deep honesty, incredible courage and painful sacrifice," wrote Khairy.

He added that the very heavy task to rebuild "our sacred party" begins now.

"I want us to return the original spirit to Umno. Where Umno isn't seen as a party alienated from the people, a party for top leaders only, a party that doesn't care about integrity, a party that is considered arrogant. I want Umno to be a party for the people. The party that safeguards the pride of the Malays, which prospers with other communities, a non-racist party — the party that really fights for all layers of society."

Hours after Khairy's rallying call, one of Umno Youth's exco members — Arman Azha Abu Hanifah — openly called for Najib to resign, Malaysiakini reported.

"Representing the Umno Youth Kesatria Briged, I wish to call on Najib to let go of the president's post willingly, so a transformation of Umno can take place.

"We demand Najib immediately resigns... We believe Najib has to be responsible for BN's defeat in the 14th general election.

"We don't hate Najib, but we prioritise the party's interests to ensure its survival," Arman said in a statement today.

The Federal Territories and Selangor Umno Youth wings have also joined calls from their Kedah and Terengganu counterparts in calling for Najib to quit.

Federal Territories Umno Youth chief Razlan Rafii said the party's top leadership must take responsibility for its defeat in the 14th general election.

"The party's top leadership must take full responsibility for this disaster and be prepared to step down and make way for new faces to lead this party," he said in a statement today, Malaysiakini reported.

Berita Harian reported that Jelebu Umno division chief Jalaluddin Alias also called for the resignations of Najib and Negeri Sembilan Umno chief Mohamad Hasan.
