KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 21): Uber Malaysia today deemed the government's initiative to assist the Bottom 40 (B40) group to participate as ride-sharing drivers under Budget 2017, as "a clear win for the ridesharing industry and [which also] shows forward-thinking leadership".

Under the budget, those in the B40 group who does not own a vehicle, can make down payment using their Bantuan Rakyat 1 Malaysia (BR1M), when they purchase a Proton Iriz. A rebate of RM4,000 will also be provided.

"We are thrilled to be engaging Proton (Holdings Bhd), the national car manufacturer, as a partner; and will make an announcement with more details soon," Uber Malaysia general manager Leon Foong said in a statement today.

"This is the first of its kind in the world for Uber. Just as Uber has been a key pioneer in the ridesharing industry, Proton has also pioneered the automotive industry in Malaysia. We share the same vision to drive Malaysia forward, through technological innovation and creating economic opportunities.

"The initiative clearly provides tangible growth and economic empowerment... Ridesharing is here to stay and Uber will certainly continue to do our part in improving urban mobility in Malaysia," he added.
