KUALA LUMPUR (May 10): U Mobile Sdn Bhd has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with TIME dotCom Bhd as part of its path to 5G strategy.

In a joint statement today, the companies said the collaboration will see U Mobile leveraging TIME's high speed and low latency backhaul solution for its 5G live trials.

U Mobile chief executive officer Wong Heang Tuck said the firm is committed to bring the benefits of 5G technology to Malaysians.

"Hence, we are conducting 5G trials in various verticals from education to healthcare to gaming to ensure that the right 5G architecture is in place for the technology's capabilities to be fully maximised when commercial rollout happens," said Wong.

He explained that TIME is the first telco provider in Malaysia and the second service provider in the world to achieve the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) 3.0 certification.

"As such, we believe TIME will be in best position to provide the appropriate mobile backhaul solution for our 5G live trials," he said.

Meanwhile, TIME executive director Lee Guan Hong said the company has believed in keeping abreast of technological innovation.

"As a result, we're able to provide services compatible with global standards that can support the evolution of network technology like 5G," he said.

The MoU was signed on May 9.
