KUALA LUMPUR (May 6): Two police officers — a Superintendent who investigated the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu and another Assistant Superintendent — who were picked up to assist investigations over alleged links to fugitive businessman Nicky Liow were released last night.

They were previously detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

Their counsel Datuk Baljit Singh Sidhu confirmed their release when contacted by theedgemarkets.com.

“They along with some other officers and two Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers were picked up and detained in the Johor Bahru police contingent headquarters.

“Some were released last night including my client and some expected to be released today,” he said.

Baljit said he and Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo had wanted to file habeas corpus applications but was informed by the authorities of the release.

He explained that his clients were not directly involved with Liow but were detained under unfortunate circumstances.

Liow's “Datuk Seri” honorific title has been stripped on April 26.

On April 27, Johor police chief Datuk Ayub Khan Mydin Pitchay was quoted to have said that 10 police and two MACC officers suspected of being involved in organised crime activities involving Liow were detained in several states.

Ayob said those picked up were aged between 35 and 49.

He said they were detained in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan, from April 21 until today under phase 2 of Ops Pelican 3.0.

"The arrests involved two officers, one with the rank of Superintendent stationed at Bukit Aman CID and an Inspector in Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS),” he was quoted to have said.

Ayob said they were being detained for 28 days to assist in investigations under Section 130V to Section 130ZB of the Penal Code, Chapter VI B Organised Crimes of the Penal Code and Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).
