KUALA LUMPUR (May 2): Former Prime Minister and Pakatan Harapan chairperson Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is being investigated for spreading fake news.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim told Bernama that a police report was lodged against Mahathir regarding his statement that the private jet he was about to board to Langkawi to file his nomination papers was sabotaged.

"For the case on the fake news, it involves a claim by Tun Dr Mahathir that the jet which he had chartered to fly to Langkawi was sabotaged last Friday," he said after opening a crime prevention awareness programme at the Tun H S Lee traffic police station here today, Bernama reported.

He said eight police reports have been lodged with the Kuala Lumpur police in connection with the 14th general election since the campaign period began last Saturday.

He said two of the cases involved ceramah (political talks) held without a permit and and one for mischief involving fire.

He said there were also three cases for trespassing, one under the Anti Fake News Act 2018 and one involving an inquiry against the police.
