KUALA LUMPUR: The first of two 1,000mw ultra-supercritical (USC) coal-fired power plants in Port Dickson owned and operated by Jimah East Power Sdn Bhd, started commercial operations on Wednesday, bringing the total power generation capacity in Peninsular Malaysia to 22,748mw.

In a statement yesterday, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) said the second 1,000mw plant, a 70:15:15 joint venture involving TNB, Mitsui & Co Ltd and The Chugoku Electric Power Co Ltd, is on track to begin commercial operations in December.

The two plants are TNB’s third and fourth super-efficient coal-fired power plants. The national utility company’s two other USC coal-fired plants are Manjung 4 and Manjung 5 in Lumut.

“The two plants, strategically located, are crucial in reinforcing the security of Peninsular Malaysia’s power supply,” it added.

The USC, an efficient coal-burning technology, has a 40% efficiency compared with a conventional coal-fired power plant with a 36% efficiency.
