KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 28): Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) has partnered with MekongNet, a leading internet service provider and internet exchange provider in Cambodia, to meet the growing needs of its customers.

In a statement, TM said MekongNet will be hosting and providing network infrastructure for TM's multi-services node or point-of-presence (POP) in Cambodia.

The POP, which is located in MekongNet's internet data centre, in Phnom Penh will be serving various services including internet protocol virtual private network (IPVPN), IP transit and global ethernet services.

"This will enable MekongNet to provide alternative connectivity solution to its customers as well as serving Cambodia's growing demands for international internet bandwidth through diverse routes, connecting to TM's other POPs in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong," the statement read.

This partnership enables both TM and MekongNet to capitalise on each other's regional strength, supporting bilateral communication needs between these two countries and further allowing MekongNet to expand product reachability to its customers worldwide through TM's global presence, it added.

TM global and wholesale vice president Mohamed Asri Jaafar said TM's alliance with MekongNet will further strengthen its regional footprint in South East Asia and also support the vision to establish Asean as a dynamic and competitive economic block.

"Through the new POP, TM will be able to offer a vast range of services at a competitive price, going in and out from Cambodia through diversified routes via submarine and terrestrial cables, connecting to our existing on-net network presence," he said.

"The new POP will address the increasing demand of IP services coming from the Indochina region, which, just like the rest of the emerging market, is currently experiencing rapid economy and internet bandwidth growth," he added.

MekongNet president and chief executive officer Sok Channda said its partnership with TM will meet the requests of its potential and existing carrier and enterprise customers for the company to expand its presence overseas.

"We believe that this new partnership with TM will go a long way towards fulfilling these requests. MekongNet will be able to serve its multinational customers who need global services via this POP of multi-services," she said.

"Telecommunications infrastructure is critical to provide quality solutions and services to our clients across the world. It is a great progress and opportunity to partner with TM," she added.

The bilateral master service agreement, signed by both companies, reinforces a safer network for both parties' customers as well as providing affordable, high performance connectivity including point-to-point, and point-to-multipoint services.

TM shares closed two sen or 0.3% lower at RM6.74, with a market valuation of RM25.33 billion.
