KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 12): Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) has introduced a map-based geomatic service for various industries called SmartMap Application Programme Interface (SmartMap API) that can enhance business operations with geographic information system (GIS) capabilities.

In a statement today, TM mass market marketing operations vice president Moharmustaqeem Mohamed said SmartMap API is a comprehensive service that provides a breadth of geographical information for industries such as retail, hospitality, automotive, insurance, shipping and logistics, telecommunication, and government departments.

The geographical information includes property lot numbers, operational information such as demographic data as well as the surrounding points of interest, which will enrich the value of the areas.

"This, in turn, provides business customers with the flexibility in building up the level of detail they require for the mapping service to be customised and integrated into their website or application.

"Besides that, the business and operations data used or embedded in this service can be hosted locally by the customers thus ensuring the privacy and integrity of customer information," he said.

Moharmustaqeem said the geomatic service offered more than purchasing base maps in aiding the visibility of businesses as it enable businesses to embed a map for any website or on any application that they are using.

It further assists business customers in designing their own maps and ultimately decide on the level of information suitable and relevant for their companies' audience, he said.

Moharmustaqeem added that TM would also do geocoding for businesses based on the raw data it received from the latter.

"For businesses that have already embarked on GIS activities, it would be easy to embed TM's map in SmartMap API to their website, connect to their standard GIS software and deploy relevant business applications.

"Businesses need not have GIS expertise because SmartMap API uses simple programming such as HTML and Javascript, making it very convenient to embed maps into their websites so they can focus on their business objectives.

"As a start, customers can use SmartMap, which is a ready-to-use application to carry out geographical market studies, operational analysis, planning and reporting.

"The service also does not require any hefty investment in hardware and software," he said, adding that the data is kept current with map updates done at least four times a year without additional charges.

At 12.30pm, TM rose seven sen or 1.03% to RM6.89 with 5,389,800 shares done for a market capitalisation of RM25.6 billion.
