KUALA LUMPUR (April 15): Datuk Seri Tengku Sarifuddin Tengku Ahmad, the press secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, today slammed the allegations of wrongdoing on Najib's part in accepting a US$681 million (RM2.6 billion) political donation, saying comments from Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir have proved that the allegations are completely false.

Yesterday, al-Jubeir was quoted as saying at the summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in Istanbul that US$681 million deposited into Najib's personal bank account was a “genuine donation”.

In a statement today, Sarifuddin said al-Jubeir's remarks also confirmed what the prime minister has maintained all along, and what multiple lawful authorities concluded after exhaustive investigations, that is, the funds were a donation from Saudi Arabia.

Sarifuddin said former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who has been demanding Najib's resignation for more than a year over alleged financial scandals involving 1Malaysia Development Bhd and the RM2.6 billion donation that went to Najib's personal bank accounts, should be held responsible for the damage he has inflicted on Malaysia’s reputation.

“Tun Mahathir’s lies were motivated by personal interest, not care for Malaysia or the people.

"It was an attempt to use deception to unseat a democratically-elected government, just to save the political career of Tun Mahathir’s son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir," he said.

“Western media who allowed themselves to be used to propagate false politically-motivated allegations should apologise to the Malaysian people," added Sarifuddin.
