KUALA LUMPUR (July 29): Telekom Malaysia Bhd's managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Noor Kamarul Anuar Nuruddin (pictured) has tendered his resignation today, with immediate effect, according to sources in the telecommunications industry.

It is understood that the group's former chief operating officer Imri Mokhtar is one of the candidates who have been shortlisted to take over the helm from Noor Kamarul.

When contacted, a Telekom Malaysia’s spokesperson said the group does not comment on speculation.

Imri is currently the chief operating officer of Celcom Axiata Bhd after he resigned from Telekom Malaysia in January.

Imri was previously a candidate proposed by Telekom Malaysia’s board of directors to the telco’s special shareholder, the Minister of Finance Inc (MoF Inc), in November 2018. MoF Inc approved the candidate Imri, who was then the acting CEO. The proposal was said to have also obtained the support of then prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

However, the appointment did not happen. Instead, Noor Kamarul was appointed in June last year after the position had been left vacant for one year.
