KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 24): Former Bursa Malaysia CEO Datuk Seri Tajuddin Atan (pictured) has been appointed as MMC Corp Bhd’s new independent and non-executive chairman with effect from Sept 1.

He will be replacing Tan Sri Shamsul Azhar Abbas who is resigning from the position to pursue other business commitments, the group said in a filing today.

Tajuddin, 61, is currently the independent and non-executive chairman of Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd and the independent and non-executive director of Cagamas Bhd.

Prior to his eight-year tenure at Bursa Malaysia, he had served as the managing director of RHB Bank Bhd from May 2009 to March 2011.

Tajuddin was also the president and group managing director of Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd from December 2007 to April 2009, and CEO of Bank Simpanan Nasional from October 2004 to November 2007.

Shamsul, the former Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) president and CEO, was last month appointed as Sapura Energy Bhd’s non-independent and non-executive chairman. 

He had been with Petronas for 40 years in various capacities and key positions including as president and CEO from 2010 to 2015, prior to his appointment as group chairman of MMC in July 2015.

Shamsul, 68, had also served as president and CEO of MISC Bhd from July 2004 to Dec 2008, before becoming its chairman from February 2010 to August 2011.  

Shares of MMC closed 3.5 sen or 5.19% higher at 71 sen today, valuing the group at RM2.16 billion. Over the past year, the stock has fallen by 36%.
