KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 20): Lembaga Tabung Haji (LTH) has appointed former Khazanah Nasional Bhd managing director Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar as its new chairman effective Monday (Dec 20).

Azman will be replacing Tan Sri Md Nor Yusof, who stepped down recently after helming the pilgrimage fund since July 2018.

The Edge had reported earlier on Monday, quoting sources, that Azman is slated to be the chairman of LTH.

“The appointment of Tan Sri Azman is also expected to further drive its ongoing efforts to become an Islamic institution respected for its performance and governance, in line with its mandate of facilitating Malaysian Muslims to save for the purpose of hajj.

“Tan Sri Azman has had an illustrious career in both the corporate world and in public service. His recent appointments include the chairman of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), the chairman of the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF) and as a member of the National Recovery Council," LTH said in a statement.

The pilgrims fund highlighted that Azman had played a pivotal role in driving the success of leading Malaysian organisations, which include Khazanah Nasional Bhd, Axiata Group Bhd, Iskandar Investment Bhd and IHH Healthcare Bhd.

Meanwhile, LTH group managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Amrin Awaluddin said Azman’s vast experience, exceptional leadership and proven track record will contribute towards steering the fund to success amid the challenges posed by the pandemic.

“We are grateful to have such a respected figure who brings a wealth of experience. Azman is well known for having led the revamp of Khazanah Nasional and the GLC Transformation Programme as the managing director of Khazanah Nasional from 2004 to 2018,” he said.

Azman holds a Master of Philosophy in Development Studies from Darwin College, Cambridge University as a Chevening scholar and a Diploma in Islamic Studies from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) holder and a fellow of the Association of Chartered and Certified Accountants (ACCA).
