KUALA LUMPUR (May 12): UEM Edgenta Bhd has appointed Syahrunizam Samsudin as its managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) effective July 1.

Syahrunizam, 47, replaces Datuk Azmir Merican Azmi Merican, who is now the group managing director of Sime Darby Property Bhd.

Prior to this, Syahrunizam was the CEO of Touch 'n Go Sdn Bhd (TNG) in 2015, according to UEM Edgenta’s filing with Bursa Malaysia today.

During his tenure with TNG, Syahrunizam oversaw TNG’s commendable growth in the digital financial services sector.

With his experience in TNG, UEM Edgenta said, he will play an important role to ensure the group continues its sustainable growth and long-term strategic plans.

“We are pleased to welcome Syahrunizam as the MD/CEO of UEM Edgenta. He is a proven leader with business vision and experience in engineering and technology which will benefit the company in our next phase of product expansion, innovation and growth,” said Tan Sri Dr Azmil Khalid, the chairman of UEM Edgenta, in a separate statement.

Syahrunizam held numerous leadership roles prior to his time with TNG, including as the CEO of MTU Services (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, president of Scomi Engineering Bhd, as well as being involved in the setting up of technology ventures such as SBS Technology Solutions and Ata Plus.

He also played a leading role in the setting up of iPerintis (currently Petronas ICT Sdn Bhd) and later became its chief operating officer (COO) and head of operations.

UEM Edgenta's share price closed three sen or 1.16% higher at RM2.61 today, bringing it a market capitalisation of RM2.17 billion. A total of 109,200 shares were traded.
