KUALA LUMPUR: Syahrul Azmir Ahmad Zaki, chief executive officer (CEO) of Kontena Nasional Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NCB Holdings Bhd, has resigned, slightly more than a year into the job.

Syahrul Azmir, 40, assumed his current post on Nov 7, 2013, which was left vacant following the resignation of Hood Osman on May 10, 2013. Hood was charged in the Shah Alam Sessions Court last month with criminal breach of trust, involving RM9.9 million of the company’s funds. The court has fixed today  for mention.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia yesterday, NCB said the effective date of Syahrul Azmir’s resignation is Jan 1, 2015. However, there were no reasons given for the resignation.

Syahrul Azmir joined the NCB group in February 2013 as CEO of Kontena Nasional’s subsidiary Kontena Nasional Global Logistics Sdn Bhd. Prior to that, he served in senior management positions for a combined period of more than 14 years, in two international logistics companies.

“The news does not come as a surprise since Kontena Nasional has been loss-making and the last financial quarter results were bad,” a source close to the matter told The Edge Financial Daily yesterday.

It is understood that NCB group managing director Abi Sofian Abdul Hamid will step in as interim CEO of Kontena Nasional until a suitable candidate is found.

The source noted that a suitable candidate would be someone who is able to set realistic targets for the company and key performance indicators.

Permodalan Nasional Bhd, the country’s biggest fund management firm owns 49% of NCB which in turn owns 100% of Northport (Malaysia) Bhd and Kontena Nasional.
