KUALA LUMPUR (March 12): Sunway Medical Centre at Sunway City in Selangor has been designated as a Covid-19 vaccination centre and is administering the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to frontliners as part of phase one of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.

In a statement on Wednesday, the medical facility — which is owned by diversified conglomerate Sunway Bhd — said it will serve as a vaccination centre for Assunta Hospital, Columbia Asia Hospital Puchong, Columbia Asia Hospital Petaling Jaya, Kelana Jaya Medical Centre, KPMC Bandar Puteri, SALAM Shah Alam Specialist Hospital, Thomson Hospital, Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital, QHC Hospital and Hospital Bersalin, Klinik Pakar & PoliKlinik Pusat Rawatan Islam (PCSB) Pusrawi.

Throughout March to April, Sunway Medical Centre expects to reach over 3,000 private healthcare frontliners. Vaccine recipients are scheduled for their shots in small groups with adequate social distancing at Sunway Medical Convention Centre.

Sunway Medical Centre chief executive officer Bryan Lim said the hospital is honoured to receive the responsibility from the Ministry of Health.

“We are also grateful for the support from the Ministry of Health, the Petaling District Health Office (Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah Petaling) and all these private hospitals. Truly, we are all in this together and we need to push towards a successful national immunisation effort,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sunway Medical Centre medical director Dr Seow Vei Ken urged everyone to get vaccinated when their turn comes, as everyone has a duty to protect themselves and their loved ones.

“While vaccination is a key step in helping to curb the pandemic, we must remember to continue observing the necessary public health measures such as social distancing, wearing of mask and good hygiene practices until we have successfully achieve herd immunity together,” he added.

Under phase one, which lasts from February to April, Malaysia aims to vaccinate 500,000 people. In this phase, public and private healthcare personnel, and those in essential services, defence and security personnel

In a tweet today, health director-general Tan Sri Noor Hisham Abdullah said 249,909 people have been given the vaccine as of yesterday.

Shares in Sunway were 0.59% or a sen lower at RM1.69, valuing it at RM8.34 billion at 11:29am. It saw 460,200 shares done.
