SUBANG JAYA (July 9): Sunway Bhd foresees “substantial revenue” contribution from the group’s tripartite collaboration with Celcom Axiata Bhd and Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd to advance the fifth generation (5G) technology for Sunway City Kuala Lumpur.

Its president Datuk Chew Chee Kin said the property developer is keen to integrate 5G technology into the 324-hectare one-stop city’s smart township solutions, which encompass Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), under the long-term partnership with Huawei and Celcom.

“We hope that with 5G, business will grow a lot, [and] revenue will go up five to 10 times maybe, instead of just growing incrementally,” he told reporters after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Celcom, Sunway and Huawei here today.

“This will completely change the game. With such speed [offered by the 5G technology], you can serve more customers and do a lot better. So, the revenue will definitely be a very important factor, not just the cost we spend, but the revenue we receive will be very substantial,” he said.

Chew did not disclose the total cost of the project but said the bulk of it will be spent on research.

The MoU, he said, aims to explore the potential for Celcom and Huawei to be the 5G technology enabler for Sunway, with Subang Jaya-based Sunway City Kuala Lumpur being the “launch pad” of this ground-breaking partnership.

All three parties, he said, will explore the possibility of facilitating and supporting one another within the digital eco-system to promote technology adoption to enrich people’s lives.

Among the plans under the collaboration is to use the 5G technology to transform the buses plying elevated lanes in Sunway City’s bus rapid transit (BRT) system into autonomous vehicles, and enhance the local security system.

“The proposed collaboration will see the development of smart solutions in the areas of public safety and security, telehealth, e-learning, hospitality, leisure and retail experience using the latest telecommunications technology as they become available for Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s model smart sustainable city, as well as other existing and upcoming developments of Sunway.

“As 5G connectivity will drive optimum adoption of Industrial Revolution 4.0 solutions for smart township, the three parties involved will potentially develop an architectural design, use cases and deploy projects based on the latest technological standard for cellular networks for Sunway City Kuala Lumpur,” said Chew.

“We envisage Sunway City Kuala Lumpur to be Malaysia’s model smart sustainable city where a host of communities live, work, play, learn in a safe, healthy and connected environment,” he added.
