KUALA LUMPUR (June 28): Based on corporate announcements and news flow today, companies that may be in focus on Monday (July 1) include: Sunway Construction Group Bhd, Unisem (M) Bhd, Perdana Petroleum Bhd, Supermax Corp Bhd, Serba Dinamik Holdings Bhd, Kumpulan Powernet Bhd and Ikhmas Jaya Group Bhd.

Sunway Construction Group Bhd (SunCon) has secured three projects worth a total of RM496.8 million.

SunCon said its projects secured year-to-date totalled RM1.54 billion, exceeding its target of RM1.5 billion for 2019.

SunCon group managing director Chung Soo Kiong said the group was pleased to have met its 2019 target well ahead of the end of the year.

"We will continue to work to secure new contracts and move forward with our expansion strategy into ASEAN and India," he said.

Unisem (M) Bhd is closing its facility in Batam, Indonesia, that has been bleeding since 2011.

The group’s unit PT Unisem has informed its employees, customers, suppliers, creditors and other stakeholders that it will discontinue the operations.

“The decision to discontinue operations in PT Unisem was arrived at due to continuing losses over the years since 2011. Despite recent investments, the business outlook for PT Unisem continues to be weak,” it said.

Perdana Petroleum Bhd has bagged two work awards by Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd for the provision of accommodation work barge vessel.

The contracts were received by the group’s wholly owned subsidiary, Perdana Nautika Sdn Bhd on May 17.

The estimated contract value for the work orders are between RM9.6 million and RM15.8 million.

Glove manufacturer Supermax Corp Bhd is acquiring a Japanese coloured contact lens company for RM3.85 million as it seeks to gain strategic access to the lucrative cosmetic lens market in Japan.

Supermax said its 70%-owned subsidiary Aime Supermax is buying Clayton Dynamics Co Ltd — together with its wholly-owned subsidiary Plan A Co Ltd — from Fordham Precision Co Ltd.

The acquisition, it said, will give Supermax a strategic access to the lucrative cosmetic lens market in Japan, with Japan being one of the largest contact lens markets in the world.

Serba Dinamik Holdings Bhd founder and group CEO Datuk Dr Mohd Abdul Karim Abdullah has been appointed as executive deputy chairman of Kumpulan Powernet Bhd effective immediately.

Kumpulan Powernet, which is involved in manufacturing of warp knitted fabric and property development, said Abdul Karim, 54, holds a 20.04% stake in the group.

Kumpulan Powernet saw the emergence of Abdul Karim as a substantial shareholder on June 20 when he acquired 15.26 million shares or a 20.04% stake via an off-market transaction.

The group also announced the appointment of Mustakim Mat Nun, 46, as its group managing director.

Ikhmas Jaya Group Bhd is confident that it can secure a portion of contracts to be awarded to local companies for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, given its expertise in bore piling and foundation works as well as bridge construction.

Group managing director Datuk Ang Cheng Siong said Ikhmas Jaya has a proven track record in specialised areas — which was a good sign for it to secure at least a fraction of the works required to construct the rail network.

Ang noted that Ikhmas Jaya has already submitted its application for the pre-qualification exercise for the ECRL project, and is currently waiting for the results.
