KUALA LUMPUR (May 9): Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) said today it strongly condemns the alleged targeted harassment against political leaders and human rights defenders on Malaysia's 14th General Election voting day.

In a statement, SUARAM said human rights groups including SUARAM and Bersih 2.0 besides opposition politicians had reported constant telephone calls to their personal telephone numbers as early as 7:50am  from Malaysian number 03-2072 2090 and a series of US (+1) numbers.

"Harassment such as this is a clear attempt to impede the work of human rights defenders and politicians at the critical juncture of voting day. State agencies including the Royal Malaysia Police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission must investigate the matter immediately," SUARAM said.

Meanwhile, Malaysiakini reported today that Pakatan Harapan came under major attacks via scam telephone calls and emails, while social media accounts were hacked.

"Among the leaders affected are PKR deputy president (Datuk Seri Mohamed) Azmin Ali and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng. Azmin said his handphone, emails and Facebook were hacked since 6am today.

"Other Harapan leaders and candidates whose social media and contact details have reportedly been hacked included Zairil Khir Johari, Elizabeth Wong, Chang Lih Kang and Lee Boon Chye and Kerk Chee Yee," Malaysiakini reported.
