(Oct 23): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has completed its investigations into a Sarawak assistant minister suspected of abusing his power, and has turned over the case files to its Kuala Lumpur headquarters for further action.

Sarawak MACC director Datuk Badrul Shah Norman said the investigation papers had been submitted some time last month.

He declined however to comment on the outcome of the investigation after closing an anti-corruption forum with Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) grassroots leaders in Kuching yesterday.

MACC disclosed last May that it was investigating an assistant minister over the award of a multi-million ringgit contract to build a new Baitulmal building in Petra Jaya to his construction firm.

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister's Office Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman later admitted he was being investigated for alleged abuse of power and corrupt practices.

Daud, who is minister in charge of Islamic religious affairs in the state and chairs the Baitulmal management board, also saw his personal bank account which contains several million ringgit frozen by the anti-graft agency.

The investigation led to calls by the opposition for Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem to suspend Daud from Cabinet.

State PKR vice-chairman See Chee How, who led the call, also said that Daud should have the decency to temporarily step down to uphold the pledge of integrity he had made in January.

Adenan resisted the demand, saying that Daud was only being investigated by the authorities, not charged. – The Malaysian Insider
