CYBERJAYA (July 22): The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) today lodged a police report on two incidents of pollution of the raw water source in Sungai Selangor to enable an investigation into the possibility of sabotage.

SPAN chairman Charles Anthony Santiago said two incidents within three days are “very alarming”.

He said the odour pollution incident last Friday caused the closure of Phases 1, 2 and 3 of the Sungai Selangor Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and the Rantau Panjang WTP.

The four WTPs had to be shut down again, just as water supply reached the 97 per cent level, following the second incident of diesel pollution of the raw water source due to sand mining upriver, he said in a statement.

He said SPAN sympathised with the people of Selangor for the inconvenience they suffered due to the closure of the WTPs.

SPAN Central Region director Jalalluddin Sulaiman lodged the report at the Bestari Jaya Police Station in Kuala Selangor at about 10 am.
