KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 15): The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) said it is open to discuss with various parties on utilising the rail network operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd’s (KTMB) cargo services.

This is in line with the commission's aim to enhance the freight industry, but subject to guidelines and due process.

However, SPAD said it has not received any formal licence application from Consortium Zenith BUCG Sdn Bhd, whose chairman Datuk Zarul Ahmad Mohd Zulkifli was yesterday reported as saying the consortium is awaiting approval from SPAD for a licence to expand KTMB's freight rail network.

"SPAD would like to clarify that the commission has not received any formal licence application from Consortium Zenith and hence, the recent claim by the company that it is awaiting approval from SPAD as reported in the media, is inaccurate," it added in a statement today.

Bernama TV reported Zarul Ahmad as saying that Consortium Zenith was allocating RM800 million to position itself to become a profitable and sustainable freight railway operator.

He also said he received support from the Ministry of Transport to obtain the licence and to be another rail operator besides KTMB, as the government mulled to introduce multiple rail operators in the country.
